On January 6, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he was stepping down. The Liberal Party needed to find a new leader. That person would serve as Canada’s prime minister until the next federal election.

On March 9, Liberal Party members across the country cast their votes. They chose Mark Carney to lead them. Mr. Carney won by a landslide with 86 percent of the vote.
