Two Dalhousie University scientists have found a cheap, eco-friendly way to turn saltwater into freshwater. This dome-shaped device can make 3.5 litres of fresh water a day. That’s enough to cover one person’s daily needs.

The secret ingredient? A powder made from recycled tires.

How does it work?

The device floats on the water’s surface. Cotton wicks on the bottom soak up seawater and pull it into the dome.
